Renowned musician Imelda May, Limerick hurling captain Declan Hannon and presenter Bláthnaid Treacy are joining forces as language ambassadors for this year’s festival. This campaign aims to encourage people of various levels of Irish to get involved. The annual international festival runs from March 1st to 17th with a program of Irish language events organised by community groups, schools, cultural and sporting groups in Ireland and internationally.

Seachtain na Gaeilge le Energia have announced their ambassadors for this year’s festival as they prepare to launch a program of exciting events designed to celebrate our native tongue at home and abroad. The announcement was made live on air on RTÉ 2FM as part of their bilingual show StaidAir which is designed to support Leaving Cert students while they engage with the language in an informal way.

Bláthnaid Treacy, Seachtain na Gaeilge le Energia ambassador says:
“I am delighted to have been appointed as an ambassador for Seachtain na Gaeilge le Energia this year and am especially delighted to be sharing my ambassador duties alongside Declan and Imelda, two standout individuals in their respective fields. It is a great honour to have the platform to promote the Irish language and it was a real moment of pride for me when I got to announce this year’s ambassadors on my RTÉ 2FM show, StaidAir. I’m really looking forward to this year’s festival and hopefully seeing more people make use of their cúpla focal!”

Conchubhair Mac Lochlainn, Seachtain na Gaeilge Chairperson says:
“This year lots of events will take place online, so there’s more opportunities than ever for people to take part in the festival, no matter where they are. I’d encourage anyone, regardless of  what level of Irish they have, to take part in an event this year. From people beginning on their language journey, those who are brushing the rust of their cúpla focal and people who are fluent speakers but don’t get the opportunity to use their Gaeilge as often as they’d like, there’s an event there for everyone.”

Energia Sponsorship Manager, Amy O’Shaughnessy said:
“We’re delighted to have Imelda May, Declan Hannon and Bláthnaid Treacy as ambassadors for this year’s Seachtain na Gaeilge le Energia festival. As an Irish company, we want people to embrace the Irish culture and are encouraging everyone to use their cúpla focal during this year’s festival. With a wide range of events for all levels of Irish it’s a perfect at-home activity to upskill in during the Lockdown.”

The annual Seachtain na Gaeilge le Energia festival is the biggest international Irish language festival and takes place every year in March. This year’s festival runs from 1st – 17th of March with thousands of activities taking place all over the world to celebrate Ireland’s native tongue. A full list of Seachtain na Gaeilge le Energia events and activities can be accessed from: www.snag.ie

The festival has been organised by Conradh na Gaeilge since 1902 and we are most grateful for the support the festival receives from Foras na Gaeilge and Energia.

EDITOR’S NOTE:
Conradh na Gaeilge is the democratic forum for the Irish-speaking community. The Conradh has over 200 branches and numerous individual members registered around the world, members that work hard to promote the use of Irish in their own areas. Conradh na Gaeilge’s main aim is to promote the use of Irish as the standard language in Ireland. Conradh na Gaeilge was established by Douglas Hyde, Eoin Mac Néill, and their colleagues on the 31st of July 1893. The organisation runs Irish-language courses; advocates for the language rights of Irish-speakers; raises awareness about the language; hosts the international Irish-language festival Seachtain na Gaeilge; manages the Irish-language information hub PEIG.ie and the Irish-language bookshop An Siopa Leabhar; supports Raidió Rí-Rá; and much more.
