Children of the Poor House Archive Series
Clifton House, once the Poor House of Belfast, is one of the oldest working buildings in Northern Ireland. This summer, we continue to draw stories from its vast archive, most of which date back to the 1700s. Recently we developed a series of blogs focusing on the stories of the children who passed through its doors. They give a glimpse into the poverty families faced in developing Belfast and the tragedy that often surrounded their lives. They also document the care these children received once admitted to the Poor House, and the opportunities to escape poverty through the education and employment provided by the Belfast Charitable Society.
