Saturday was a historic day for supporters of Irish Unity. Sinn Féin Vice-President Michelle O’Neill became the First Minister in the North of Ireland.
Over 100 hundred years ago, Ireland was partitioned by the British. The northern state was created and designed to have a permanent pro-British Unionist majority. The highest office was and was to be held by the British Unionist supporters of partition.
Today the government in the North of Ireland is headed by a pro-Irish unity First Minister. Her party, Sinn Fein, is the largest party in the legislative Assembly in the North and across all of Ireland.
The pro- British unionist electoral majority is gone. The north of Ireland is now a shared place.
Michelle’s election demonstrates that there is no ceiling to what we can achieve. Irish Unity is possible.
Michelle has promised to be a First Minister for All. The days of second-class citizens are gone. We are living in a decade of opportunity. We have the potential to build a new and united Ireland.
